Huthi rebels in Yemen have launched a series of attacks on ships in the Red Sea, prompting Australian mining giant BHP to divert its shipments from Asia to Europe around Africa.

The attacks, which have targeted oil tankers and other commercial vessels, have raised concerns about the safety of shipping in the region. The Houthis, who are aligned with Iran, have said they are targeting ships carrying weapons to Saudi Arabia.

BHP, which is the world’s largest mining company, said it was taking the necessary precautions to protect its shipments. The company said it would be diverting its shipments around Africa until the security situation in the Red Sea improves.

The attacks have also disrupted global trade. The Red Sea is a major shipping route for goods from Asia to Europe. The diversion of ships around Africa is expected to add costs and delays to shipments.
