The Houthi rebels in Yemen have declared responsibility for an attack on an American ship off the Yemeni coast, as confirmed by military spokesperson Yahya Saree on Wednesday.
During a televised statement, Saree mentioned that the Houthi naval forces targeted the American vessel “Genco Picardy” in the Gulf of Aden “with a series of appropriate sea missiles”.
The military spokesperson for the Houthis pledged to “continue launching attacks as part of self-defense and in support of the Palestinians in Gaza”.
Over recent weeks, the Houthi assaults have disrupted global trade and sparked concerns over potential international inflation. The group asserts that their attacks aim to pressure Israel and the West to halt violent assaults on the Gaza Strip.
These attacks have intensified fears of the repercussions of the conflict between Israel and Hamas potentially destabilizing the entire Middle East.
On Wednesday, the U.S. State Department designated the Houthis as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” group for a period of 30 days, marking a significant development in international relations and security dynamics in the region.
