Two children were killed in Pakistani military airstrikes in Iran overnight, according to a Pakistani intelligence official on Thursday.
This action comes in response to Tehran’s earlier strikes on targets in Pakistan.
The senior intelligence source, who cannot provide information to the media publicly, told the French Press Agency (AFP): “I can only confirm that we conducted strikes against armed groups hostile to Pakistan, targeted inside Iran.”
He added that an official government statement would be released later.
Several explosions were heard on Thursday morning in the restive southeastern region of Iran, just two days after Tehran carried out strikes against “terrorist targets” in Pakistan.
Iranian state news agency IRNA quoted an official in Sistan-Baluchestan province stating that the sound of “explosions was heard in various areas around the city of Saravan.”
Pakistani sources clarified that the military targeted “Baloch Liberation Army” camps within Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province.
Iran had recently launched missiles at three countries, including Iraq, Syria, and Pakistan, within a 24-hour period, striking specific targets while avoiding any escalation with the United States, according to experts.
The Pakistani government characterized the attack as an “unjustified violation” of the country’s airspace.
The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement confirming the attack, which was initially reported by Iranian media and later withdrawn.
