Russia has called on foreign powers to refrain from provocations following the results of the presidential elections in Taiwan.
Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated in a press release, “We urge all external forces to refrain from provocative actions that undermine regional stability and international security,” as reported by the Russian news agency Sputnik.
Zakharova emphasized that the relationship between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait is purely an internal matter for China.
Attempts by countries to exploit Taiwan’s elections to pressure Beijing and destabilize the situation in the Strait and the region are considered a threat and are likely to yield counterproductive results.
Russia’s position on Taiwan remains unchanged, with Russia recognizing only one China in the world. Taiwan is an integral part of China, and Russia opposes Taiwan’s independence in any form.
The ruling Democratic Progressive Party in Taiwan retained power after its candidate, Lai Ching-te, won the presidential election, succeeding the outgoing president Tsai Ing-wen.
