Diaa Rashwan, the head of Egypt’s State Information Service (SIS), strongly refuted recent “unfounded allegations” circulating on social media and certain news outlets, claiming that additional fees are being imposed on Palestinians at the Rafah Border Crossing, connecting Gaza to Egypt.
During a media briefing, Rashwan categorically stated that Egypt would not impose additional burdens on Palestinians, especially during challenging circumstances. He highlighted Egypt’s substantial contribution to the daily influx of humanitarian aid, fuel, and essential supplies into Gaza, accounting for no less than 70 percent of the total aid. This assistance includes over 150 trucks daily, including six fuel trucks.
Rashwan emphasized Egypt’s unwavering stance against any economic or financial incentives that might compromise the Palestinian cause or lead to displacement. He dismissed claims that any non-official entity was charging fees for crossing into Egypt from Gaza.
Since the beginning of the Israeli war, Rashwan clarified that Egypt has not imposed any fees on Palestinians crossing into Egypt, whether for medical treatment, residency, or travel within or outside the country.
He urged Palestinian travelers to report any extortion or pressure at the Rafah crossing to Egyptian authorities promptly, allowing swift legal action to be taken against those involved.
The Rafah crossing currently serves as the sole connection between Gaza and the outside world, facilitating the movement of individuals. Other crossings, under Israeli control, remain closed. The latest update from the Palestinian Health Ministry reported at least 23,357 casualties in the Israeli war on Gaza since October 7.
