Morocco has been elected to chair the United Nations Human Rights Council for 2024, after 30 countries supported its candidacy in a vote held in Geneva.

A statement from Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the election of Morocco, for the first time in its history, to chair this prestigious UN body, is a recognition by the international community of the vision of King Mohammed VI of Morocco on issues of protection and promotion of human rights.

Morocco’s candidacy was supported by a broad range of countries, including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and China. The vote was seen as a sign of Morocco’s commitment to human rights and its growing role in the international community.

Morocco’s presidency of the Human Rights Council will begin on January 1, 2024. The council is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights around the world.
