The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed deep concern on Monday regarding the “high toll” of Palestinian journalists who have been killed in the Gaza Strip, following the deaths of two journalists on Sunday.

In a statement on the “X” platform, the High Commissioner emphasized that all cases of journalists being killed, including Hamza Wael Aldahdouh and Mustafa Tharaya, in an incident attributed to the Israeli army, must undergo a comprehensive and independent investigation to ensure strict adherence to international law, and violations must be subject to legal prosecution.

The killing of journalists is a matter of great concern, and the call for a thorough investigation reflects the commitment to upholding the principles of justice and accountability in such cases.

Earlier, the eldest son of Al Jazeera’s Gaza bureau chief has been killed in an Israeli strike in southern Gaza.

Hamza al-Dahdouh, an Al Jazeera network journalist and cameraman, was driving in a car with other journalists along a road between Khan Younis and Rafah on Sunday when it was hit.

Freelance journalist Mustafa Thuraya was also killed. A third journalist, Hazem Rajab, was seriously injured.

Four other members of bureau chief Wael al-Dahdouh’s family have been killed.
