The leader of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, reaffirmed his commitment to a ceasefire aimed at ending the war, even in the absence of progress in peace negotiations.

In a statement following his meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Pretoria, Dagalo briefed him on the “significant efforts made to end this war.”

Dagalo stated, “I have affirmed our steadfast commitment to a cessation of hostilities,” although he did not mention whether he would meet with Burhan or when.

The two rival generals agreed last month to hold direct talks and initiate discussions on a potential ceasefire, according to the East African Regional Body (IGAD).

Vincent Magwenya, the spokesperson for Ramaphosa, during his meeting with Dagalo, expressed hope for an “imminent face-to-face dialogue” between Dagalo and Burhan and called for an immediate ceasefire.

Dagalo is on a tour of African countries and met with Kenyan President William Ruto on Wednesday, following visits to Uganda, Ethiopia, and Djibouti.

It was initially scheduled for Burhan to meet with Dagalo on December 28th in Djibouti, but the meeting was postponed, as announced by the Sudan News Agency (SUNA).
