The office of the mayor of Dallas County, Iowa, confirmed on Thursday that the police are actively investigating a shooting incident at Perry High School in the city of Perry, Iowa.
Initial reports of a possible shooter at the high school came at approximately 7:40 AM local time, according to NBC.
The news station reported that the middle school was secured around 8:25 AM, and a SWAT team secured the high school by 8:27 AM. The elementary school was evacuated by 8:32 AM.
According to ABC, at least one person was killed, and another was injured in the shooting.
Linda Andorf, the chair of the Perry Community School District board, described today’s reports of a shooting as “horrific,” adding, “It’s extremely tragic.”
A spokesperson for the Perry Police Department confirmed a shooting at the high school without providing further details, and a press conference is scheduled for 11 AM local time.
Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy expressed his solidarity with the victims of the incident on the social media platform “X,” stating, “Our prayers are with the students, teachers & families of the Perry Community.”
Perry High School is part of the “Perry Community School District,” located about 25 miles northwest of Des Moines, serving around 1,785 students, according to its website.
