UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for those responsible for the attack on a memorial ceremony in Kerman, Iran to be held accountable. The attack killed over 100 people and injured many more.

Guterres offered his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the people and government of Iran, and expressed his wishes for a speedy recovery for the injured. Reports indicate that the attack took place near the tomb of Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, in Kerman province, which is commemorating the fourth anniversary of his killing.

The European Union also condemned what it described as a “terrorist act” after the two bombings that took place in southeastern Iran in Kerman, coinciding with the commemoration of the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani.

A spokesperson for the European Union’s diplomatic service said in a statement that “the European Union expresses its solidarity with the Iranian people,” condemning the “shocking number of civilian casualties.” He stressed that “those responsible for this attack must be held accountable.”

The attack is a reminder of the ongoing threat of terrorism in the region. It is important that those responsible for this heinous act be brought to justice and that all efforts be made to prevent future attacks.
