The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on Tuesday condemned the killing of several children in Russian airstrikes on Ukraine.
“The new year began with loss, pain, and suffering for the people of Ukraine,” OCHA said in a statement. “For the third day in a row, widespread airstrikes by the Russian Federation have killed and injured many people and destroyed homes and other civilian infrastructure.”
OCHA expressed concern about power and water outages in many parts of the capital, Kyiv, noting that temperatures this week are expected to reach nearly -20 degrees Celsius. The fighting has also isolated hundreds of thousands of people in the Donetsk region.
OCHA said it is committed to continuing to support the people of Ukraine who are suffering from the devastation caused by the Russian-Ukrainian war. It offered condolences to the families of the victims and those who are searching for the missing.
OCHA also condemned the indiscriminate attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, which are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law.
