In a recent announcement, Tunisian President Kais Saied has decided to extend the state of emergency across the country for an additional month, as reported by the official Journal of the Republic of Tunisia on Friday.

The state of emergency, which bestows special powers upon authorities, enabling them to ban gatherings, censor media, and impose curfews, will remain in effect until January 30, 2024. This extension goes beyond the previous deadline of January 1, 2024.

Tunisia initially declared a nationwide state of emergency on November 24, 2015, in response to a bus bombing that tragically claimed the lives of 12 presidential guards. Since then, Tunisian authorities have consistently renewed this measure to address ongoing security concerns.

President Saied had previously announced the extension of the state of emergency until the end of 2023 on January 31, 2023. This extension marks one of the lengthiest periods since the initiation of the state of emergency, reflecting the ongoing challenges and security considerations faced by the nation.
