Belgium has assumed the presidency of the EU Council, taking over from Spain with the motto “Protect, Strengthen, Prepare.”

This role, which Belgium will hold for six months, sees the country at the forefront of the EU and NATO. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo highlighted Belgium’s deep connection with the EU, given its capital hosts major European institutions.

During this crucial period, marked by conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza and global challenges like climate change, Belgium aims to address these issues while holding the presidency.

De Croo emphasized the high expectations of over 440 million EU citizens, highlighting their desire for stability and progress, and the EU’s responsibility to meet these challenges effectively.

The Belgian presidency has outlined six key priorities. First is the protection of the rule of law, democracy, and unity, focusing on preparing the EU for expansion by supporting candidate countries and strengthening the Union’s policies and structures.

The second priority involves adapting to geopolitical shifts and technological advancements like artificial intelligence, with an emphasis on economic security, reducing dependencies, and promoting technological leadership.

The third and fourth priorities are centered around environmental sustainability, addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, alongside reinforcing social and health agendas.

The fifth priority deals with migration and asylum, particularly in light of the new European pact, with a focus on strengthening external relations, especially with African nations, in adherence to international law.

Lastly, Belgium aims to advance a globally engaged Europe, promoting openness, dialogue, and cooperation despite geopolitical conflicts. This includes utilizing the EU’s capacities in economics, security, defense, development, and humanitarian aid to meet its foreign policy goals.
