In a strong statement, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the intense attack launched by Russia on Ukrainian cities and towns, targeting vital social and infrastructure facilities.
According to Reuters, the Russian assault resulted in the deaths of at least 24 Ukrainian civilians and left over 134 others injured.
Guterres emphasized that such attacks violate international humanitarian law and must cease immediately.
The High Commissioner for Human Rights at the United Nations, Volker Türk, expressed shock at the widespread coordinated missile and drone attacks carried out by the Russian Federation across Ukraine.
These massive attacks targeted densely populated areas in several cities and towns, including Kyiv, Lviv, Khmelnytskyi, Chernihiv, Sumy, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Odessa, and Zaporizhia.
The attacks also affected a wide range of civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings, a maternity hospital, schools, kindergartens, parks, a metro station, and a shopping center, in addition to energy infrastructure.
Several areas experienced power outages due to damaged transmission lines. The Commissioner for Human Rights reported the deaths of at least 23 civilians and injuries to 134 others.
Rescue teams are still searching for individuals trapped under the rubble of residential buildings.
The international humanitarian law explicitly prohibits attacks deliberately targeting civilian objects, as well as indiscriminate attacks, under all circumstances.
Türk renewed his call to the Russian Federation to immediately halt its attacks on Ukraine and strictly adhere to all rules of international law related to the conduct of hostile actions.
