An extradition cooperation agreement between Morocco and the Netherlands was signed yesterday (Monday) in Rabat.
The agreement was inked during a meeting between Moroccan Minister of Justice Abdelatif Wahbi and Dutch Minister of Justice and Security Dilan Yesilgöz.
This agreement, part of the legal and judicial cooperation program between the two countries, aims to allow for the transfer of suspects or convicts of crimes from one country to another.
It highlights the effectiveness of combating transnational crimes and reduces the chances of evading punishment, serving as a key pillar in enhancing Morocco’s role in fighting cross-border crimes.
Minister Abdelatif Wahbi remarked that “this agreement is an extension of the judicial cooperation protocol between the two countries, and we consider it a great appreciation for the strong historical partnership between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.”
He added that this agreement would strengthen the path of justice by reinforcing mechanisms to combat cross-border impunity.
The Dutch Minister of Justice and Security stated that organized crime does not recognize borders, and international criminal networks continuously work to enhance their illegal activities in arms, drugs, and human trafficking.
They swiftly adapt their smuggling methods, including laundering illegally obtained money abroad, according to the minister.
She further explained that “the same applies to our investigative agencies, which work closely and increasingly with other countries on the international stage to prevent criminals from seeking refuge beyond their borders.” With this treaty, “we reinforce the strong relations we have built with Morocco and intensify our joint fight against transnational organized crime.”
During the meeting, various topics related to coordination in legal cooperation, combating organized crime, money laundering, tackling suspicious financial transactions, financial crimes, and asset seizure were discussed.
The statement concluded that this meeting aims to strengthen friendship ties and facilitate legal and judicial cooperation between Morocco and the Netherlands, promoting the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and best practices to serve the interests of both countries.
