The United Arab Emirates (UAE), as the sole Arab member of the UN Security Council, has submitted a resolution calling for an urgent humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

The draft, prepared in collaboration with Egypt and Palestine, is set for a vote on Monday.

The proposed resolution urges all involved parties to adhere to their international obligations, particularly under international humanitarian law, emphasizing the protection of civilians.

It underscores the need to safeguard civilian facilities, facilitate aid delivery, and ensure the safety of humanitarian workers.

The resolution emphasizes the duty to respect and shield various civilian structures, including hospitals, medical facilities, schools, places of worship, and UN facilities.

Furthermore, the resolution calls on conflicting parties to permit, ease, and facilitate the immediate, secure, and widespread delivery of humanitarian assistance directly to the Palestinian civilian population in Gaza.

This necessitates an urgent and sustained cessation of hostilities to enable the unimpeded delivery of aid.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the critical situation in Gaza, describing it as reaching a breaking point. He urged immediate action, stressing that the world and history are closely watching.

Guterres acknowledged the severity of the situation, emphasizing that the recent attacks by Hamas on Israel do not absolve Israel of its own violations of humanitarian law.

He expressed deep concern for the people of Gaza, who are enduring extreme hardships without the essentials for survival, emphasizing that nowhere in Gaza is considered safe.
