The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, criticized Algeria, the hosting country of the Tindouf camps, for committing human rights violations and violations of humanitarian law in these camps, which are controlled by the armed separatist Polisario militias.

In his speech during the annual meeting of the UN Committee of 24, held in New York, Hilale emphasized that “the hosting country of the Tindouf camps, Algeria, is directly responsible for all human rights violations that occur on its territory. This includes the military indoctrination of children, which poses a significant danger and has been condemned by human rights bodies, particularly the Human Rights Committee and the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.”

The diplomat further pointed out that human rights are the fundamental basis of human dignity and must be respected and protected by all, under all circumstances. He highlighted that these rights are being violated on a daily basis in the Tindouf camps by the Polisario militias, in full view and with the knowledge of the hosting country, Algeria. He added that these violations specifically target women and children, as reported by international human rights organizations and non-governmental organizations.

Morocco’s criticism of Algeria’s role in the Tindouf camps highlights the ongoing tensions between the two countries regarding the Western Sahara issue. The Tindouf camps have been a source of concern due to reports of human rights abuses, including restrictions on freedom of movement, lack of access to basic services, and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals, particularly women and children.

The issue of the Tindouf camps remains a point of contention in the broader conflict over the status of Western Sahara. Morocco has proposed an autonomy plan for the region, while Algeria has supported the Polisario Front’s claims for independence. The international community continues to call for a peaceful resolution and dialogue between all parties involved.

The criticism from the Moroccan ambassador at the United Nations underscores the importance of addressing human rights concerns in the Tindouf camps and the need for international attention and action to protect the rights and well-being of the individuals living in these camps.
