On Wednesday, Somalia expressed gratitude for a $1.1 million military support package from the European Union, emphasizing its role in bolstering the nation’s counterterrorism initiatives and efforts to restore stability.
The Ministry of Defense, in a statement from the capital, Mogadishu, highlighted the significance of the EU assistance, announced on Monday, in strengthening the capabilities of the Somali National Army (SNA) and facilitating the transition to the SNA assuming security operations within the country.
“This crucial support will significantly advance the training and equipping of forces at General Dhagabadan Training Center (military facility),” stated the Ministry.
The European Union Council adopted the assistance measure, equivalent to 1 million euros, under the European Peace Facility, specifically aimed at providing military equipment to the SNA capable of delivering lethal force.
The EU emphasized that the additional support would enhance the Somali army’s training and equipment, reinforcing its commitment to assisting the SNA in assuming full responsibility for security operations in Somalia.
“The EU is determined to help the SNA to assume full responsibility over security operations in Somalia. Our joint interest remains security and stability in the country,” affirmed the EU.
The statement clarified that the ammunition provided through this assistance would be strictly used for training SNA personnel in coordination with the EU Training Mission in Somalia, adhering to relevant international law, including human rights and humanitarian law.
The European Union is a key donor supporting stabilization efforts in Somalia, emphasizing its commitment to promoting security and stability in the region.
