UNICEF spokesperson James Elder has described the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip as dire, particularly affecting children. Elder emphasized to the U.S.-based Alhurra channel on Wednesday the urgent need for a ceasefire for humanitarian purposes and the guarantee of continuous delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need in Gaza.
Elder highlighted UNICEF’s priorities in the region, including the provision of water, medicine, and supplies to combat the cold weather.
He referenced a recent aid convoy to northern Gaza, which carried emergency medical supplies and medicines. Elder stated that approximately 1.5 million people are now homeless due to the ongoing crisis.
In a previous statement, Elder brought attention to the desperate and challenging conditions faced by children in Gaza, citing reports of over 6,000 child fatalities. The situation in Gaza remains a focal point for international humanitarian efforts, with UNICEF actively contributing to the provision of essential aid and advocating for peace and stability in the region.
