The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations have expressed their unwavering support for the UAE as it prepares to host the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).

During a virtual extraordinary ministerial meeting held on 12 June, 2023, the GCC countries emphasised the significance of this climate conference in addressing the global challenge of climate change.

The ministers hailed the selection of the leadership team for COP28, with Dr Al Jaber appointed as the COP28 President-Designate, Shamma Al Mazrui as the COP28 Youth Climate Champion, and Razan Al Mubarak as the UN Climate Change High-Level Champion.

Recognising the crucial role of coordination, cooperation, and joint action, the GCC countries endorsed the team’s call for united efforts to ensure the success of COP28.

They extended an invitation to all nations and relevant international organisations to actively participate in the conference.

Furthermore, the GCC countries acknowledged the positive outcomes of COP27 and congratulated the Arab Republic of Egypt for its effective organisation of the previous conference.
