Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has accused other countries of double standards in the context of the conflict in the Middle East.

In an interview with Irish radio RTÉ, Varadkar directed his accusation at the European Union and other Western nations, stating that the failure to take a similar stance of unequivocal rejection as they did with what Russian President Vladimir Putin did in Ukraine, regarding Israel, is seen as a double standard.

The Irish government had issued a warning shortly after Hamas’ attack on Israel last month, stating that Israel should not overreact in its response to Gaza, or risk losing support from other nations.

Varadkar is seeking a ceasefire in Gaza and has emphasized that his country adopted an early clear stance that Israel has the right to defend itself but does not have the right to violate humanitarian law.

Varadkar expressed concerns that the double standards exhibited by some countries could undermine Ukraine’s struggle, stating that he and other European leaders have been working diligently to garner support for Ukraine from the global South.
