Former Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra has been appointed as the Personal Envoy of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to Sudan. This appointment follows the resignation of the previous envoy, German diplomat Volker Perthes, in September.
Lamamra, an experienced diplomat, served as Algeria’s Foreign Minister from 2013 to 2017 and again from 2021 to 2023. His diplomatic career also includes a tenure as the United Nations Envoy to Liberia from 2003 to 2007, and as Algeria’s Ambassador to the United Nations from 1993 to 1996.
This appointment comes at a crucial time for Sudan, as the country navigates complex political challenges and seeks to maintain stability and progress.
Lamamra’s imminent appointment is not only a personal recognition but also reflects the international acknowledgment of Algeria’s consistent efforts in promoting peace and stability globally. Algeria has played an active role in diplomatic initiatives, and Lamamra’s appointment reinforces the country’s commitment to contributing to solutions for complex geopolitical issues.
