In the US state of Maine, a shooting incident has left 20 people feared dead, prompting a massive manhunt for the gunman, who is still at large.
The authorities in Lewiston are investigating two active shooter events, urging residents to stay indoors, away from windows, and keep doors locked.
Police have identified the suspect as 40-year-old Robert Card, describing him as “armed and dangerous.” Images released by the police show Card with a military-style assault rifle inside a bowling alley.
The suspect is reported to have around 20 years of military service and worked as an army firearms instructor. Notably, he had recently spent time in a mental health facility due to hearing voices, as per an internal police notice.
Card, a sergeant first class in the army reserve specializing in petroleum supply, had no previous combat deployments overseas since enlisting in 2002, according to the US Army.
His military service includes awards such as the Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defence Service Medal, and Army Service Ribbon.
Following the shooting, a massive police presence, including hundreds of officers armed with rifles, has been deployed across the city. Roads have been closed as law enforcement intensifies efforts to locate and apprehend the suspect.
