Josep Borrell, the top diplomat of the European Union, delivered a sobering warning regarding the intensifying conflict between Israel and Hamas, expressing deep concern that the heightened emotions associated with the war could lead to a dangerous spillover of violence far beyond the confines of the Middle East, potentially reaching the streets of Europe.

Speaking during a debate in Strasbourg, Borrell emphasized the critical imperative of preventing such a scenario to ensure the safety and security of European citizens.

Borrell drew attention to the risk of a perilous spiral of violence, underscoring the responsibility of the international community, particularly European nations, in averting a broader crisis.

He referenced a recent statement from Al Azhar Mosque, a leading institution of Sunni Islamic learning headquartered in Cairo.

The statement not only criticized the West but also urged Palestinians to stand their ground and resist Israeli aggression.

This declaration, particularly following a devastating strike on a Gaza hospital that claimed the lives of over 500 Palestinians, raised substantial concerns about the potential amplification of tensions.

In addressing the complexities of the conflict, Borrell stressed the need to impose constraints on Israel’s right to self-defense.

While acknowledging the legitimacy of self-defense, he emphasized that, like all rights, it must operate within the bounds defined by international law, especially international humanitarian law.

Borrell underscored the significance of international cooperation in adhering to these principles and the imperative of thoughtful reflection to guide decisive action in the midst of the ongoing crisis.
