Cameroon’s capital city, Yaoundé, was hit by torrential rains and unprecedented flooding on Monday, resulting in the tragic death of at least 27 Cameroonians and leaving over 50 others injured.

Cameroonian relief sources have reported that the rains that submerged Yaoundé today were the most severe in several days and were accompanied by severe weather disturbances that have left dozens missing.

The director of Cameroon’s relief agency stated that military and civil defense teams have begun efforts to block the flow of rainwater in mountain valleys to prevent water from cascading into low-lying areas. So far, this preventive action has resulted in the collapse of 30 homes.

Background: Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, was struck by a devastating storm that led to severe flooding and tragic consequences. The heavy rains, combined with adverse weather conditions, caused widespread damage and posed a significant threat to the safety of the city’s residents.

Relief efforts are underway to address the immediate aftermath of the disaster, including rescue operations and providing assistance to those affected by the floods. The situation in Yaoundé highlights the vulnerability of communities to extreme weather events and the need for disaster preparedness and response measures in the region.
