Google is set to expand its footprint in Germany by inaugurating its first cloud data center in Hanau, aimed at capitalizing on the growing demand for internet data storage.

The four-story facility is a segment of a one-billion-euro investment initiative by Google’s parent company, Alphabet, which is also associated with a cloud infrastructure in the Berlin-Brandenburg area.

The Hanau center will offer storage and cloud services to Google Cloud’s commercial clients, including notable names like Commerzbank, Lufthansa, and automotive supplier Fehrer, while explicitly excluding private consumer data storage.

The selection of the Rhine-Main area, particularly proximate to Frankfurt and one of the world’s largest internet exchanges, DE-CIX, stems from its status as a key data traffic hub in Europe, with substantial data streams, high bandwidth, and rapid data transmission capabilities.

Google emphasizes a climate-neutral operation for the systems, relying heavily on power from renewable sources, affirming that 80% of the annual average energy utilized originates from CO2-free sources.

The investment in Germany, projected to exceed one billion euros by 2030, aligns with Google’s strategy to diversify revenue streams beyond advertising and to stake a substantial claim in the cloud market, thereby presenting robust competition to entities like Amazon AWS, Microsoft, and local providers such as Ionos of the United Internet Group.
