Several cities and counties in Taiwan announced the closure of schools and offices on Wednesday due to expected strong winds and heavy rains as Typhoon Koinu approaches.

Taitung County, where the storm is expected to make landfall, announced the closure of all offices and schools Wednesday afternoon, while Orchid Island and Green Island will be closed for the entire day, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA).

Penghu County’s government also announced that schools and offices would remain closed today due to the approaching storm.

As of this morning, Typhoon Koinu was located 280 kilometers east of Cape Eluanbi in southern Taiwan, moving westward at a speed of 11 kilometers per hour, accompanied by winds of 155 kilometers per hour and gusts of 191 kilometers per hour, according to the German News Agency (DPA).

Typhoons are common in Taiwan, and the government takes proactive measures to ensure the safety of its residents by closing schools and offices when such storms approach.
