Sudan’s Darfur Faces Humanitarian & Health Crisis

In a vehement appeal to international communities, Adam Regal, the official spokesperson for displaced persons and refugees, elucidates the dire humanitarian and health situation unfolding in Darfur, describing it as nothing short of catastrophic.

The anguish peaks for citizens, particularly in West, Central, South, and North Darfur states, where the conflict has persisted unbridled for over five months, causing death, rape, looting, arson, displacement, and forced migration across extensive areas of Darfur and Sudan.

Regal’s statement reveals that thousands of families and citizens have sought refuge in Chad, Central Africa, South Sudan, and other regions controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement under the leadership of Abdul Wahid Mohammed Ahmed Al Nur.

They have also fled to various camps like Kalma, Hamidiya, Nertiti, Zamzam, and Abshouk, desperately requiring emergency assistance and basic services, such as food, medicine, clothing, and shelter.

The spokesperson underscores the atrocities committed throughout the seemingly endless war, where violent sexual crimes, rape, kidnapping of girls and women, and crimes tantamount to genocide, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity have been perpetuated since 2003 by the Sudanese Armed Forces and affiliated militias in their campaign against Sudanese citizens in Darfur.

He further highlights that the war has decimated all civil institutions, including health and treatment facilities, UN institutions, international organization headquarters, and their operating warehouses in Darfur, leading to a severe crisis that has resulted in hunger, the spread of epidemics and diseases, and malnutrition among children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers, who had previously depended on the nutrition program by the World Food Program (WFP).

In a call to action, the statement implores organizations, the United Nations, peace-loving countries, regional and international humanitarian and human rights organizations, charities, and those with a compassionate human conscience to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to these victims, devastated by the continual absurd wars that have obliterated all civil institutions, including health and therapeutic ones, and UN institutions and storage facilities operating in Darfur.

The General Coordination calls upon the United Nations, the African Union, the International Security Council, the Troika countries, UN agencies, and international organizations concerned with human rights conditions to exert more pressure on the conflicting parties around the power seat to immediately stop fighting for humanitarian purposes.

It also demands the opening of safe passages for humanitarian aid convoys and resorting to dialogue to overcome these catastrophic conditions, in which we have lost the best sons of the homeland, who were the hope and future of Sudan.

The unfolding narrative in Darfur is a stark reminder of humanity’s shared responsibility to safeguard and champion the rights and well-being of all, particularly in times of conflict and distress.

Darfur, a region in Sudan, has been entwined in a complex and devastating conflict since 2003, leading to mass displacements, horrific human rights abuses, and a spiraling humanitarian crisis. Ethnic tensions and political conflicts have embroiled the region in violence, thereby making it one of the world’s most prominent ongoing humanitarian crises.
