Solidarity and Justice in Focus
Meeting on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 78th General Assembly, both leaders expressed the need for new approaches. Their primary focus was on finding root-cause solutions, solidarity, and justice to address pressing challenges, especially in achieving Sustainable Development Goals.
Tunisia’s Commitment to the United Nations
Nabil Ammar reiterated Tunisia’s deep commitment to the principles and charter of the United Nations. He also voiced his support for the Secretary-General’s initiatives under the “Our Common Agenda” framework.
This includes calls for reforming the international financial structure, allowing developing countries better access to financing, and combatting poverty and climate change implications. Tunisia stands ready to strengthen cooperation with the UN and play an active role in achieving these goals and bolstering international peace and security.
UN’s Appreciation for Tunisia’s Role
Guterres, in response, affirmed his support for Tunisia, acknowledging the country’s significant contributions to the UN’s agenda. He particularly praised Tunisia for its compassionate response towards refugees during the 2011 Libyan crisis.
Tunisia: Bearing the Brunt of Climate Change
In a separate event, Nabil Ammar emphasized that Tunisia is among the countries most affected by climate change. This has dire consequences for its water security, food supplies, and development efforts.
During his address at the ministerial consultations held in New York on activating the Loss and Damage Fund established during the last COP 27, Ammar stressed the importance of climate justice for developing countries. He called for the expedited activation of the fund, hoping to see it operational before the upcoming COP 28.
Call to Donor Countries
Ammar also urged donor countries to allocate sufficient resources for the fund’s effective activation. Simplifying access procedures, given the urgent nature of climate action, is crucial. He reinforced Tunisia’s commitment to actively participating in international efforts in this realm.
With these conversations and steps forward, Tunisia continues to assert its role and concerns on the international stage, seeking solidarity and collective solutions for pressing global issues.
