Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called on the United Nations (UN) to play a pivotal role in enhancing the awareness levels among immigrants.

Addressing a press conference at Circo Colombo in New York, reported by Italy’s Aki News Agency, Meloni stressed, “Regarding the issue of immigrants, I believe the significant role the UN can play is also in raising awareness, helping people understand this isn’t an ideological matter. The problem exists, and major challenges can be addressed.”

She added, “I think the role the UN can play in managing hotspots in Libya, evaluating asylum requests, and ultimately distinguishing between the imposed refugee issue and the matter of economic migrants can indeed be crucial and greatly beneficial. It won’t be decisive, but it’s essential.”

Highlighting the importance of collaboration, the Italian Prime Minister explained, “To achieve this, we need the cooperation of African governments, and this is what we need to work on.” She opined that the UN is vital in permitting, “without following an ideological approach, a greater interest from everyone and not misusing it to mix issues that don’t align with each other.”

An Ongoing Challenge: Italy, being a key gateway to Europe, has faced significant migration pressures in recent years, especially from North African countries. The Mediterranean nation has grappled with balancing humanitarian needs with security and economic concerns.

A Complex Issue: The differentiation between refugees fleeing conflict and persecution and economic migrants looking for better opportunities is a challenging task for many European nations. Effective international cooperation, led by institutions like the UN, is seen as essential in managing this distinction and ensuring a coordinated response.

The UN’s Role: The United Nations has historically played a central role in managing global migration challenges, offering platforms for dialogue, fostering cooperation, and setting standards. Prime Minister Meloni’s comments underscore the importance of this role and the need for enhanced awareness and collaboration in addressing these challenges.
