In a move that has drawn considerable attention on the international stage, the spokesperson for the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs expressed deep “surprise and regret” over Tunisia’s unexpected decision to deny entry to a delegation from the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, which was slated to visit the nation today.
Nabila Masrali remarked in a statement released on Thursday evening, “We are profoundly taken aback by this resolution, especially given the numerous visits that have occurred over recent months. These engagements have facilitated candid and open dialogue between all European and Tunisian institutions, including representatives of civil society.”
She continued, stressing the sentiment of the EU’s ambassador in Tunisia, who immediately voiced his regret concerning the decision. Masrali pointed out that such a move does not contribute positively to fostering the already established ties between the EU and Tunisia. She emphasized the “strong and strategic partnership” that binds the European Union and Tunisia.
The spokesperson underscored the paramount importance of maintaining open dialogue, especially during a time when both entities are facing unparalleled challenges together.
Tunisia and the European Union share a history of close cooperation, especially in economic and political realms. Tunisia is regarded as a vital partner for the EU in the Mediterranean region, and their relationship has only deepened post the 2011 revolution, with the EU actively supporting the Tunisian transition. This recent development, however, brings to the forefront possible tensions in diplomatic ties, underscoring the significance of transparent communication and collaboration between the two parties, especially in an era marked by global uncertainty and geopolitical shifts.
