A diplomatic source in Riyadh has confirmed that Iran is set to reopen its embassy in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, approximately three months after an agreement was announced to resume diplomatic relations following a 7-year hiatus.
Preferring to remain anonymous, the diplomatic source in Riyadh revealed in press statements that the reopening of the Iranian embassy is slated for Tuesday at 6 PM, noting that the opening ceremony would be attended by the appointed Iranian Ambassador in Saudi Arabia.
Last month, Iran appointed a veteran diplomat Alireza Enayati as its new ambassador to Saudi Arabia, following a China-brokered deal in April between Tehran and Riyadh that ended years of political rift between the two countries. Enayati currently holds the position of Deputy Foreign Minister, having previously served as ambassador to Kuwait during President Hassan Rouhani’s tenure.
He also served as an assistant to the foreign minister and director-general of Arabian Gulf affairs at the ministry, according to Iran’s judiciary’s news agency Mizan.
The former Iranian embassy building, which had been closed for several years, has been fully refurbished and is ready to be reopened.
On March 10, Iran and Saudi Arabia, under the auspices of China, reached an agreement to reopen their respective embassies and execute economic and security cooperation agreements signed more than twenty years ago.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has reportedly received an invitation to visit Saudi Arabia, according to Tehran. Meanwhile, Iran announced it has extended an invitation to Saudi monarch King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to visit Iran.
