In a move reflective of its commitment to its citizens, the Moroccan government has officially announced the initiation of a comprehensive program dedicated to the reconstruction of areas devastated by the recent earthquake.
This declaration was made public during a press conference held in Rabat by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, as reported by the Anadolu Agency. Akhannouch emphasized the government’s unwavering determination to implement the directives of King Mohammed VI. “We are currently in the phase of finalizing a clear and meticulously planned proposal on this matter, which will be unveiled in the upcoming days,” the Prime Minister stated.
He further illuminated on chairing a meeting with the ministerial committee assigned with the formulation of an emergency program. This program is poised to focus on the rehabilitation and provision of essential support for rebuilding homes in the affected regions promptly.
Highlighting the immediate aftermath of the disaster, Akhannouch indicated that efforts are underway to find housing solutions for residents who lost their homes in the quake. He divulged distressing details, noting the damage to approximately 500 schools, ranging from primary to secondary institutions, in addition to healthcare centers and roads requiring paving.
The Prime Minister praised the relentless efforts of the Ministry of Interior and other agencies during these trying times. “Their unwavering focus on rescuing individuals in perilous situations, burying the deceased, and supplying essential food and shelter resources is commendable,” he added.
On the fateful evening last Friday, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake, as measured on the Richter scale, rocked major cities in Morocco, including the capital Rabat, Casablanca, Meknes, Fez, Marrakech (North), and Agadir and Taroudant (Central). The latest figures from the Ministry of Interior reflect the grim toll, with the earthquake claiming the lives of 2,681 individuals and leaving another 2,501 injured.
In 2004, the northern region of Morocco experienced a devastating earthquake that claimed numerous lives and left thousands homeless, drawing international attention and aid to the affected areas.
