The Algerian government announced on Saturday its decision to open its airspace for humanitarian and medical flights destined for Morocco, following the catastrophic earthquake that claimed over 1,037 lives.
The statement from the Algerian Presidency highlighted the nation’s readiness to provide comprehensive humanitarian assistance, leveraging all available resources to support Morocco in this tragic time.
Notably, the borders between Algeria and Morocco have been closed since 1994, and Algeria suspended its diplomatic relations and shut its airspace to Morocco in 2021, accusing Rabat of hostile actions. These actions included allegations of espionage against Algeria, supporting separatist groups, and not fulfilling agreements related to the disputed Western Sahara region – claims that Morocco has vehemently denied, labeling them as baseless.
Despite the fragile political ties between the two governments, the neighboring countries, sharing a lengthy border that stretches from the Mediterranean Sea to the desert, enjoy profound historical and cultural connections. This shared heritage means many ordinary Algerians and Moroccans maintain better personal relationships.
A wave of solidarity swept across Algerian social media platforms, with many expressing their support for Morocco. Some hope that political differences won’t hinder aid to their neighbors. Jalal Hamdaoui, a retired teacher, voiced via phone that despite the severed diplomatic ties, Algerian citizens have a moral responsibility to assist the Moroccans as they are “brothers and neighbors.”
Abdelkader Ben Qurina, head of the Movement of Society for Peace, an Islamic party, stated that the party urges the government to set aside differences and extend all assistance to the Moroccan people.
