The Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres has expressed profound sorrow over the earthquake that struck Morocco today, resulting in numerous fatalities, as reported by Moroccan news site “Al-Yawm 24.”
A statement from Stéphane Dujarric, the official spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, revealed the Secretary-General’s deep solidarity with the Moroccan government and its people during these challenging times. He extended his sincere condolences to the families of the victims, wishing a swift recovery for the injured.
The United Nations stands ready to support the Moroccan government in its efforts to aid affected residents. The World Health Organization stated that the earthquake, centered in the Al-Hawz region, has caused multiple fatalities across various areas in Morocco. The disaster has killed hundreds, impacting more than 300,000 people in Marrakesh and its surrounding regions.
The international organization expressed its condolences to the Kingdom of Morocco and its unwavering support for the Moroccan people impacted by the Al-Hawz earthquake.
Moroccan television reported that the death toll from the devastating earthquake that shook the kingdom has risen to 820, with another 672 injured. The country faced a terrifying night when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake, based on the Richter scale, hit on Saturday, with its epicenter located in the “Ijil” community of the Al-Hawz province.
Relief efforts have been initiated in the regions affected by the earthquake, which was of 7.0 magnitude on the Richter scale. It has been reported that seven trucks, filled with blankets, camp beds, and lighting equipment, were dispatched to provide humanitarian aid as swiftly as possible to the disaster-stricken residents.
In the early hours of Saturday, a team from the civil protection unit worked diligently and quickly to load the trucks, aiming to deliver the assistance promptly to those affected by the earthquake.
