In a landmark move to amplify the role of women in Jordanian politics, the Italian government and UN Women signed a cooperation agreement titled “Empowering Women for an Active Role in Shaping Jordan’s Political Future.”

The meeting, held today, aims to buttress Jordan’s ongoing efforts to empower women and enhance their participation and influence in the decision-making process, ultimately ensuring a political future grounded in equality and justice.

UN Women’s statement, released this Tuesday, highlighted that the project, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, is set to create an environment fostering active political, economic, and social participation for women. This involves developing legislative systems, policies, practices, and general orientations that emphasize social justice and equal opportunities for women.

The project also targets bolstering both institutional and political frameworks, rallying support from stakeholders and community groups for political and legal reforms. This will facilitate the mainstreaming of gender perspectives and women’s empowerment in party work and political entities, coupled with leveraging the media’s role in propagating positive societal values and the significance of women’s political engagement.

Additionally, the project will back awareness campaigns to highlight the realities and challenges of women’s participation in politics and leadership, offering practical solutions to these barriers.

Nicolas Burniat, the Jordanian representative for UN Women, accentuated the pivotal role women play in society’s growth and development. He remarked that this collaboration with Italy is a crucial turning point in their collective journey towards gender equality and women’s empowerment in Jordan.

Luciano Pezzotti, the Italian Ambassador to Jordan, reaffirmed Italy’s global commitment to supporting women’s empowerment, emphasizing the indispensable role women and girls play in building a more inclusive and just society. He elaborated that this Italy-funded initiative would amplify women’s participation in Jordanian politics by providing training and support, ensuring their voices are integral in decision-making processes.

The agreement underscores the shared dedication of UN Women in Jordan and the Italian government to transcend barriers and pave the way for women’s active political engagement in the Kingdom.
