Algeria has stressed the importance of implementing regulations related to reinvigorating the United Nations General Assembly, aiming to make the UN more effective and efficient in the future.
This statement came during a speech delivered by Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Ben Jamia, in his capacity as the coordinator of the Non-Aligned Movement at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Ambassador Ben Jamia pointed out that the regulations approved this year are “ambitious” and include “tangible progress” on many important matters, especially in regard to enhancing the General Assembly’s presidency office and reaffirming the Assembly’s role.
Algeria’s representative expressed satisfaction with the progress made to enhance the General Assembly’s effectiveness by streamlining its agenda and addressing recent developments related to the working methods of the special working group.
He called for maintaining the progress achieved in the process of selecting and appointing the Secretary-General, emphasizing the need to achieve gender balance and geographical representation.
This is particularly important in the selection and appointment of the best possible candidates for the position of Secretary-General and other important roles within the United Nations.
In conclusion, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations stated that revitalizing the United Nations General Assembly’s work is “a political process, not just a procedural matter.”
Its primary goal is to enhance the General Assembly’s role as a fundamental body for deliberations, presentations, and decisions.
This statement underscores the country’s commitment to strengthening the United Nations and its vital functions on the global stage.
The nation joins the international community in seeking a more efficient and effective UN General Assembly for the benefit of all member states.
