At least eight UN-run schools sheltering civilians in Gaza have been bombed in the past 10 days, according to UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini.

In the nine months of conflict, 70 percent of UNRWA schools in Gaza have been targeted, resulting in 539 deaths among those seeking refuge.

Lazzarini emphasized, “Schools must never be used for fighting or military purposes by any party to the conflict.

Schools are not a target.” He condemned the ongoing violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza, stating, “The blatant and constant disregard of international humanitarian law continues unabated.”

He urged that losing our common humanity must not become the new norm.
