The Italian authorities announced on Monday the arrival of 573 migrants from Libya to the Italian island of Lampedusa. They were aboard a fishing boat that was rescued by the coast guard patrol boats off the island.
According to the Italian news agency ANSA, the boat had departed from Libya, and the group of migrants, including four women, were transferred to the migrant hotspot in Lampedusa.
In the previous days, a woman and a two-year-old child died, and eight others were reported missing in the wreckage of two separate ships off the island. These incidents are the latest in a long series of migrant boat disasters off the southernmost island of Italy, often the first port of call for migrants and refugees trying to reach Europe from North Africa.
Lampedusa has become a focus of international attention in recent months due to a significant increase in the number of migrant boats arriving. Since the beginning of this year until November 21, a total of 150,777 migrants and refugees have arrived in Italy by sea, a 60% increase compared to the same period in 2022, according to statistics from the Italian Ministry of Interior. About 70% of these arrivals have been to Lampedusa
