A deadly shooting incident involving migrants near Serbia’s border with Hungary unfolded early Friday, resulting in three fatalities and one individual critically injured, as reported by Serbia’s state RTS television.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of abandoned agricultural warehouses close to the village of Horgos, according to the report.
Law enforcement authorities promptly dispatched a significant number of police officers to the scene, though an official statement from the police is pending.
Frequent reports of violence and armed conflicts have arisen in the border region between Serbia and Hungary.
Thousands of migrants have established camps in the area in pursuit of assistance from human traffickers to cross into European Union member nation Hungary.
The Serbia-Hungary border region resides along the Balkan land migration route towards Western Europe, spanning from Turkey to Greece and Bulgaria, then advancing through North Macedonia, Serbia, or Bosnia.
Hungary, known for its strict anti-immigration policies, has fortified its border with Serbia with razor wire fencing to stem the influx.
Nevertheless, criminal syndicates specializing in human smuggling have proliferated in the border zone, often vying for control.
Serbian police have conducted multiple operations in the border area over recent months, resulting in the apprehension of hundreds of migrants, the arrest of human traffickers, and the discovery of various weapons within the wooded terrain.
