The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, reported that at least 289 aid workers have lost their lives in the ongoing war in Gaza, which has continued for more than 10 months.
In a post on his official page on the platform “X” on Monday morning, Lazzarini stated that the number of UNRWA aid workers who have been martyred due to the ongoing conflict has reached 207 so far.
He also mentioned that around 885 healthcare workers have died as a result of the war, noting that “many of them were killed while performing their duty, providing humanitarian assistance, and medical care to the wounded and sick.”
Lazzarini highlighted that over 160 journalists and media professionals have been killed in Gaza while covering the devastating war and the ongoing violations of international humanitarian law.
He emphasized that the war on Gaza has violated all existing rules, stressing the importance of holding those responsible for these violations accountable.
Egypt and the world celebrate World Humanitarian Day on August 19 each year. On this occasion, Egypt reaffirms its unwavering commitment to humanity, neutrality, impartiality, integrity, independence, and the non-politicization of humanitarian work as core principles.
The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that this year’s World Humanitarian Day coincides with the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip and the continued suffering of the Palestinian people due to the war that has lasted for more than 10 months, during which blatant violations of international humanitarian law have occurred, including targeting humanitarian workers and aid, and blocking the entry of assistance, as part of a collective punishment policy aimed at starving and besieging civilians.
