The Russian Foreign Ministry reports that two Russian sailors are being detained in Mozambique’s Maputo port amidst a financial dispute.

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday that two Russian sailors are being held hostage in Maputo port, Mozambique. The detention is part of a conflict between the shipowner and its local agent.

The ministry conveyed in a statement to the media agency that the sailors are caught in a financial and property dispute involving the ship’s owning company and a local agency.

The Foreign Ministry added that diplomatic efforts to repatriate the sailors have not yet succeeded. The situation remains complex, with ongoing negotiations for their release.

Last week, the news site ‘Shout’ on Telegram reported that “two Russians, a Lithuanian, and two Ukrainians were detained aboard the fishing boat Volobas, which flies the Cameroonian flag, for eight months.”

This international incident highlights the risks faced by maritime workers and the complexities of maritime law.
