Two individuals have lost their lives and at least ten others were injured in a fire at a nursing home in Madrid early Sunday morning, according to Spanish emergency services.
The blaze broke out around 7:00 AM (06:00 GMT) in the facility, which houses about 40 people, as reported by Isabel Casado of the Spanish emergency services in a video published on the platform “X”.
Among the injured, a woman is in critical condition due to burns, while others require treatment for smoke inhalation, Casado mentioned.
Firefighter José Luis Castillo explained that the fire started in a room on the first floor and then smoke “engulfed” the second floor, necessitating the evacuation of residents to a safe location.
Isabel Diaz Ayuso, the head of the regional government of Madrid, said she “deeply regretted the death of two women” at the residence.
“Our support for the deceased, the injured and the workers of the residence. We are available for all that they need. RIP,” she wrote on X.
