At least 16 people, including a child, were killed on Wednesday in a Russian airstrike on the town of Kostiantynivka in eastern Ukraine.
The attack took place as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was visiting Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy swiftly condemned the assault, expressing deep concern over the impact on the civilian population.
The industrial city, located about 19 miles from the embattled city of Bakhmut, bore the brunt of this violence, with markets and pharmacies suffering significant damage.
“We must defeat this Russian evil as quickly as possible,” Zelenskyy said, highlighting the urgent need to address the escalating conflict.
According to Ukraine’s Internal Minister Arsen Avakov, at least 28 people were wounded in the attack, which targeted a bustling market in the heart of the city.
