A total of 12 civilians were killed in Yemen in January as a result of landmine explosions and other war remnants, according to the Yemeni Mine Monitor.
The monitor said in a statement broadcast by the Yemeni Satellite Channel that the victims included children and women, and that most of them were from the provinces of Hodeida, Jawf, and Al-Bayda.
The three provinces are among the most affected by landmines in Yemen, which have killed and injured thousands of civilians during the years of war.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that landmines and other explosive remnants of war (ERWs) pose a serious threat to civilians in Yemen. The agency estimates that there are millions of landmines and ERWs scattered across the country, posing a danger to anyone who comes into contact with them.
In December, OCHA reported that landmines and ERWs killed or injured at least 30 civilians in Yemen in the previous month.
The agency called on all parties to the conflict in Yemen to take steps to clear landmines and ERWs from the country. It also urged the international community to provide more funding for mine clearance and victim assistance in Yemen.
