The Ukrainian authorities announced on Saturday the death of one civilian and the injury of four others in multiple Russian strikes across the eastern regions of the country.
The announcement further confirmed that the Ukrainian military continues to repel “daily” Russian assaults in Avdiivka.
According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, communicated through the Telegram app, a civilian was killed in the shelling of the town of Chasiv Yar, with two others wounded in Toretsk and Bohdanivka.
Notably, Donetsk, where these towns are located, is one of the four regions that Russia proclaimed as annexed in 2022, along with Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Luhansk.
Despite this, the Russian military does not have full control, but intense fighting persists in parts of these areas.
In the Chernihiv region (north), a family visiting relatives in the border town of Semenivka found themselves “under enemy fire” on Saturday, as stated by the regional governor Vyacheslav Chaika.
He reported that a man and his daughter, whose ages were not specified, were injured and hospitalized.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military announced that Russian forces are conducting “daily” attacks on Avdiivka, having intensified their efforts in recent months.
They are attempting to take control of a coke-producing factory adjacent to the north of the city, which is the largest of its kind in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian forces.
The Ukrainian military asserts that it has managed to “repel” these attacks.
For around two months, Russian forces have been attempting to take control of the industrial city of Avdiivka, near Donetsk.
The city, with its infrastructure significantly damaged, is now almost entirely surrounded by Russian forces positioned in the east, north, and south.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian military intelligence reported a “resistance operation” carried out on Friday in the town of Melitopol, controlled by Moscow’s forces, resulting in the death of “several Russian occupiers.”
The operation also targeted “an enemy tanker truck, leading to the disabling of military equipment.”
The city of Melitopol (south) holds strategic importance for the Russian military, which took control shortly after the war commenced in February 2022.
